Dr. Muriel Tahtouh Zaatar, Acting Chair of the Biological and Physical Sciences Department at the American University of Dubai (AUD), participated in the 7th conference for the treatment of cancerous tumors in Lebanon. The conference was hosted by Tal Chiha Hospital on Saturday, July 22, 2023. This event marked a significant milestone in the ongoing fight against cancer in Lebanon and the broader region. It successfully brought together over a hundred eminent doctors and nurses from Lebanon, the UAE, and the diaspora, uniting them to share their knowledge and expertise on the latest advances in cancer treatment.

The event was graced by the presence of distinguished figures including Professor Joseph Youssef Bakhach, President of the Lebanese Medical Association in Beirut, Dr. Marwan Khatir, the General Director of Tal Chiha Hospital, and sessions directors Professor Fadi EL KARAK and Dr. George Assi. Also in attendance was Professor Elie Nemr, Dean of Saint Joseph University of Beirut School of Medicine, alongside several other invited guests.

During the event, Professor Joseph Youssef Bakhach stressed the pivotal role of such gatherings in raising awareness about cancer and its varied treatment options. He emphasized the necessity for sustained research and development in this field to provide patients with optimal care.

The conference sessions were led by Professor Fadi EL KARAK and Dr. George Assi. Dr. Zaatar presented her insights on cutting-edge research concerning cancer stem cells. This field holds the potential to revolutionize cancer treatment by paving the way for innovative drugs tailored to target cancer stem cells—a factor implicated in both treatment resistance and over 90% of recurrences.
