Enhancing Biology Education: AUD Biology Virtual Laboratory is an innovative project developed within the Department of Biological and Physical Sciences at the American University in Dubai, aimed at enhancing biology education through immersive, technology-enabled learning experiences.
The virtual laboratory offers students an engaging, experiential learning environment that enhances understanding of complex biological concepts, supports practical skill development, and improves learning outcomes. By integrating digital tools into laboratory instruction, the project addresses key challenges in science education while expanding access to interactive, high-impact learning opportunities.
The project was showcased at the QS Reimagine Education Awards & Conference 2025 and shortlisted for the Immersive Experiential Learning Award at the event, held in London, UK, from 1–3 December 2025. The QS Reimagine Education Conference is one of the world’s leading global forums dedicated to innovation in teaching and learning. In 2025, the conference attracted more than 1,600 project submissions across 18 categories, reviewed by over 800 international judges, with only a select number of projects shortlisted following a highly competitive international review process.
Dr. Muriel T. Zaatar, Chair of the Department of Biological and Physical Sciences, represented AUD at the conference and presented the Biology Virtual Laboratory during the Immersive Experiential Learning sessions. Her presentation highlighted the project’s educational impact, demonstrating how virtual laboratory environments can enhance biology education, foster active learning, and strengthen student engagement.
The project generated positive feedback from international experts, with discussions focusing on its educational relevance, scalability, and contribution to contemporary science teaching. AUD’s participation in the conference underscored the University’s growing international engagement and its role in advancing innovative educational practices.
