Seven undergraduate students from the Architecture program, under the mentorship of Jose Carrillo, Associate Professor of Architecture, presented their thesis-based research at the prestigious Sustainable Creative Art: Inspiration from Nature (SCIN) conference, held at the Museum of the Future from April 22nd to 24th.
The students' papers, co-authored with Mr. Carrillo, explore topics at the intersection of architecture, sustainability, gastronomy and computational design. Their work will be published in respected scientific journals, including Advances in Science, Technology and Innovation (ASTI) by Springer Nature (Scopus-indexed), and Environmental Science & Sustainable Development (ESSD).
This achievement stems from a transformation of the course ARCH 501 Architectural Design Studio IX, led by Mr. Carrillo, who has introduced a research-driven methodology that enables students to publish, exhibit and present their work at international conferences and platforms. One of the course’s highlights, the Gastrotecture Kitchen Lab, merges architectural research with edible design, encouraging innovation through hands-on experimentation.
In addition to mentoring student papers, Mr. Carrillo also presented his own research on SCOBY as a biomaterial for generative architecture, co-authored with Curro Polo Gay from the Science and Cooking Research Group at Harvard University.
The conference also featured contributions from faculty across AUD’s School of Architecture, Art and Design (SAAD), including Georges Kachaamy, Nicolas Turchi, Edoardo Rizzuti, Poupak Parvaresh, Imad Hanna, and Iyad Alsabouni, showcasing the school’s interdisciplinary excellence and collective commitment to advancing research-led education.
