He employs advanced qualitative methodologies, complemented by a strong grounding in quantitative analysis, to examine how digital technologies reshape the production and reception of media messages, and to trace the broader social implications of the digital transformation of the news field.

His current work investigates the platformisation of journalism, the transformation of professional authority in the digital public sphere, and the political economy of the news media field. He is the author of the forthcoming monograph How social media has transformed Journalism (Palgrave Macmillan), and his work has been published in leading journals such as Journalism and Journalism Practice.

Before fully transitioning into academia, Dr. Papanagnou held senior editorial roles in both print and digital media, where he led editorial teams and developed digital strategy initiatives.

He is currently Assistant Professor of Communication and Media at the American University in Dubai, where he also serves as Director of the MA in Leadership and Innovation in Contemporary Media. In this capacity, he provides academic leadership for a multidisciplinary program designed to prepare media professionals for the challenges of a rapidly transforming communication landscape. His work as director includes strategic planning, curriculum development, faculty mentoring, and industry engagement, with a particular emphasis on fostering research-led teaching, innovation in practice-based learning, and student-centered pedagogies.
