AUD hosted the Special Olympics 2022, an event that included Zumba classes, soccer and basketball & table tennis for women and men on March 24, 2022. This great initiative featured an amazing display of sportsmanship between all participating teams.
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, providing them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Some of the distinguished guests included H.E Sultan Seif Al Samahi – President of the UAE Swimming Federation, Mrs. Fatma Mohamed - Strategic and Project Manager Special Olympics UAE, Mr. Ahmed Salem – Manager of Sports Clubs at Dubai Sports Council, Mr. Salem Rached Al Mutawaa – Secretary General at the UAE Basketball Association, Ms. Hussa Al Yamahi – Assistant Secretary General at the UAE Esports Federation and Ms. Aisha Al Jasmi – Dubai Sports Council (Clubs and Sports Organizations Department).
Dr. David. A. Schmidt, President of AUD, had this to say about the event, “I cannot express fully how proud I was watching the AUD athletes interact with the Special Olympians we hosted on campus. It is a true sign of the highest character when someone gives and dedicates time to another. I saw our athletes exemplify this character and it is admirable. I was so very proud to have them representing AUD.”
