Contaminant transport beneath hydraulic containment systems such as landfills poses a major concern with regards to its impact on the surrounding environment and groundwater. The transport of contaminants through barrier systems employing composite liners occurs primarily through advection and diffusion. The mechanism of diffusion through the liners can be highly variable, depending on the nature of the contaminant and the liner’s composition. Laboratory diffusion testing and subsequent computational modelling can help quantify the behavior of barrier systems, when subject to new emerging contaminants of concern, such as PFAS and ammonia, with the estimation of an index parameter (the diffusion coefficient).
