Dr. Al-Salim is an Associate Professor of Middle East and Global Studies. He joined the Department of International Affairs and Middle Eastern Studies at AUD in 2018. Prior to that, he worked at Qatar University, The University of Memphis-Tennessee, Kansas State University and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.

 

Dr. Al-Salim specializes in the contemporary history and politics of the Middle East and the wider Islamic world. He is the author of " Palestine and the Decline of the Ottoman Empire: Modernization and the Path to Palestinian Statehood. London: Bloomsbury Publishing, 2015”. He has conducted extensive primary research in Palestine and has held Fulbright, PARK and ACOR fellowships in Jordan, Lebanon, UK, Palestine and Turkey.

 

Dr. Al-Salim’s research and teaching interests include the influential period of early history of Islam and the Islamic Golden Age in the ways in which Muslim peoples have defined themselves and their cultural identities through their historical writing. The Gun Powder Empires in the Middle East and early modern era, Imperialism and the international relations of the Middle East in the 20th and 21st centuries, and contemporary Islamist movements.

 

Dr. Al-Salim have published widely on variety of topics: Islamic history, Middle East and Gulf politics, United States role in the Middle East, Muslim art and music, Palestine in late Ottoman and Mandate period, and Muslims in Western history. He has delivered over forty papers to international conferences and to universities in Europe, the Middle East, North America, and Southeast Asia. In addition, he serves as an expert for the Middle East Institute (USA) and has contributed to NPR (National Podcast Radio), Al-Jazeera English Television, The New Straits Times, The Tennessean, and Voice of America Radio and Television.

 

Dr. Al-Salim has lived and traveled widely in the Middle East and the Mediterranean World to strengthen his knowledge about the culture and history of the region. He enjoys spending time with his family and friends, watching movies and plays, traveling collecting antiques and reading.
