Master of Science in Construction Management (M.S.C.M.)

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

AUD’s Master of Science in Construction Management (M.S.C.M.) provides engineers, architects, and construction professionals with an opportunity to broaden their education portfolio and advance in their careers.

Through a well-balanced combination of theory and practice, students are able to combine their research-based graduate studies with first-hand practical experience, in the construction of infrastructure, energy, oil and gas, industrial, commercial, and residential facilities.

The curriculum provides a unique integration of global and regional perspectives, emphasizing the role of technology, technical communication, and research in the construction management profession.

Taught by a world-class faculty of professors with doctoral degrees in engineering, business and law, the 30-credit hour program can be completed in one year (full time) or two years (part time), with a combination of technical and management courses.

Upon completion of the Master of Science in Construction Management (M.S.C.M.), graduates will be able to:

  • Advance their professional careers while staying technically current in the field of construction management or related disciplines;
  • Demonstrate social and ethical responsibility by adhering to the principles of sustainability, safety, and cultural diversity in the workplace
  • Articulate professional challenges, perspectives, and decisions through technical communication

PROGRAM DETAILS

The Master of Science in Construction Management (M.S.C.M.) at AUD consists of 30 credit hours of graduate-level courses. With a combination of management and construction related modules, the course can be completed over one-year and a half as a full time student, or two-years part time for working professionals.

Curriculum offerings are structured around a set of four core construction engineering courses, combined with one course in Decision Management. Elective options include courses in areas such as Sustainability in Design and Construction, Construction Safety Engineering and Managerial Economics.

Students can opt for a thesis or non-thesis option as follows:

Thesis Option: Students must complete 24 credit hours of course work, and a 6-credit-hour master’s thesis in a research topic agreed upon with their graduate advisor. This option is recommended for students wishing to pursue doctoral studies.
 
Non-Thesis Option: Students must complete 30 credit hours of course work and have accumulated two years of work experience prior to graduation.

Upon completion of the Master of Science in Construction Management (M.S.C.M.), students will be able to:

  • Apply knowledge in the core areas of planning, scheduling, estimating, and construction equipment and methods
  • Differentiate between different project delivery methods and contract types, in relation to construction laws and regulations
  • Use decision analysis tools and computer applications to reach informed decisions in construction projects
  • Communicate technical information effectively in written, oral, and graphical formats
  • Explain the professional and ethical obligations governing the construction management profession
  • Demonstrate knowledge in current issues and modern trends in construction management research and practice.

Facilities

Fluid Mechanics Laboratory
Equipped to perform and demonstrate a number of experiments that provide undergraduate students with the practical applications of fluid mechanics, facilities include:

  • Hydrostatic pressure apparatus to measure hydrostatic forces on submerged bodies;
  • Orifice and jet apparatus to allow students to compare between actual and jet trajectories, calculate the coefficient of discharge for various orifices, and identify different methods of flow measurement;
  • Fluid friction, bends and fitting apparatus to allow students to determine major and minor losses in pipes;
  • Pipe network apparatus to measure flow and pressure drops in a wide range of network configuration, e.g. individual pipes, series pipes and parallel pipes;
  • Flow visualization channel for conducting several applications in open channels such as hydraulic jump, discharge under sluice gate and energy equation;
  • Osborne Reynold’s apparatus facilitating the demonstration of laminar and turbulent flow.


Materials/Structures Laboratory
Equipped with testing apparatus chosen to demonstrate wide variety of experiments in materials engineering as well as structural theory, facilities include:

  • 150 kN Instron Universal Testing Machine;
  • 2000 kN Autocon concrete compressive strength machine;
  • Shmidt Hammer and ultrasonic kit for assessing the compressive strength of concrete;
  • Profometer that detects bar location and orientation, bar size, and concrete cover;
  • RAB Rockwell/Brinell hardness tester.

 

Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory
Occupies more than 200 square meters of lab space and houses multiple sets for soil classification and testing, including:

  • Casagrande and fall cone devices for liquid and plastic limits;
  • Sieve sets for particle size analysis;
  • Manual and automatic compaction devices;
  • Four panel stations available for constant head and falling head permeability testing;
  • Automated testing equipment including pneumatic consolidation apparatus, and direct shear apparatus;
  • Unconfined compression loading frames and triaxle cells for shear strength testing of soil specimens.

Circuits, Electrical Systems and Robotics Labs

  • Circuits and Electronics Lab

Enterprise Computing Lab
Dedicated general purpose computer labs, each equipped with:

  • 25-30 PCs and projector;
  • High-speed internet network;
  • Software includes MATLAB, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, MathCAD, Primavera, Etabs, SAP, Pspice.

ADMISSIONS ENTRY

All applying students must have:

  • An undergraduate degree in Engineering, Architecture, or a closely related discipline, from an accredited national or regional institutional body, achieving a 3.00 GPA or better in undergraduate study.
  • Candidates who have a minimum of three years of work experience will be given preference for admission. However, the nature, scope, length, breadth, variety and significance of the work experience will also be considered in the preference ranking of candidates.
  • For students whom do not have a background in Engineering, Architecture or a closely-related discipline, undergraduate transcripts will be evaluated to determine whether undergraduate prerequisite courses or a placement examination is required.
  • International TOEFL® or Academic IELTSTM or the equivalent score on another internationally-recognized English exam. PBT is accepted from specific centers in the UAE.

I moved from Italy to attend The American University in Dubai and pursue a degree in Civil Engineering. It was difficult for me to leave behind my friends, family and the surroundings in which I felt safe and comfortable. What I expected to find in Dubai was the perfect environment for a university student majoring in civil engineering. What appeared in front of my eyes was the biggest construction site on Earth. For some people it might be annoying, for me that’s much more interesting than any TV show.

As an engineering student, there is a lot of homework, lab work, and projects but at the same time you socialize with your fellow students, make strong bonds, and learn beyond your classroom walls.
