COURSE OVERVIEW

AUD offers an 18 credit hour Professional Teaching Certificate program for teachers and teaching assistants who are interested in acquiring the knowledge, skills and dispositions of highly effective teachers:

  • Knowledge (factual accuracy, conceptual understanding, etc.);
  • Skills (speaking, writing, reading, listening, etc.);
  • Pedagogy or performance (rapport with students, instructional strategies, managing transitions, use of technology, personal confidence, etc.); and,
  • Dispositions (attendance, respect, responsibility, initiative, judgment, attire in clinical settings, honesty, collaboration skills, emotional coping strategies, reflection and self-awareness, etc.)

At the completion of the program, students will:

  • Be an effective part of an educational team within a creative learning environment;
  • Be able to understand the political, social and cultural contexts of education;
  • Be able to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners and create a positive learning environment;
  • Be able to meet the challenges of elementary or secondary teaching by designing and implementing an effective classroom management plan;
  • Be able to use assessment data to improve instruction and learning;
  • Be able to access and integrate current and appropriate technologies as instructional tools;
  • Be able to utilize research to inform curriculum design and instructional practice.

Students who complete the Certificate will have achieved the professional competencies associated and aligned with the Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC). They may apply to continue their studies in the M.Ed. program.

COURSE DETAILS

The Professional Teaching Certificate is an 18-credit hour program designed to help students

acquire, develop and master the qualities of effective teachers, specifically relating to building human relationships, working with diverse learners and using instructional technology effectively.

All students must meet the following credit hours to complete the certificate.

PROGRAM ENTRY

All applying students must have:

  • A high school/secondary school certificate or equivalent from an institution accredited by the Ministry of Education in the U.A.E. or by the relevant national or regional institutional accrediting body;
  • International TOEFL®or Academic IELTSTM or the equivalent score on another internationally-recognized English exam. PBT is accepted from specific centers in the UAE.
  • Undergraduate or Graduate Diploma
  • The University administers the ACCUPLACERTM Exam (Math) to place students at the appropriate mathematics level. Students may substitute the SAT for this, depending on the score.
