Field Trip - Dutch Design Center
Learning about Commercial Design from Professionals
02/02/2017

Interior Design students enrolled in the IDES 302 Commercial Design course with Associate Professor Chadi el Tabbah recently visited The Dutch Design Center, a collaborative effort of leading Dutch firms: Hunter Douglas, Keller Kitchens, Royal Ahrend and Skyne. The trip was organized in collaboration with Ms. Joelle Challita from Hunter Douglas.

A brief introduction about the Dutch Design Center by Ms. Meis Kadhem was followed by a presentation about Hunter Douglas commercial fabrics and systems, during which a case study was discussed.

Students then visited Skyne and attended a lecture given by Mr. Arjen Bemmelmans who discussed branding, a set of values and ideas that every professional should convey to his/her audience about himself/herself or their company.

The students also visited Keller Kitchens in their showroom and were introduced to Prolux, a varied and flexible program for the contract market, by Mr. Wim Vos.

At Royal Ahrend, students toured with Mr. Ahmed Zaarouri, who explained how to work with customers from different sectors e.g. offices; education and healthcare, and those facing challenges such as a shaping their corporate identity within the workspace.

I believe that extending education outside the classroom is very important for our students to experience the professional world,” comments Prof. El Tabbah. “Visiting the Dutch Design Center was an impressive journey and interactive visit, and the students gained knowledge about materials, commercial projects, branding, and the latest technologies in kitchens manufacturing.”
