Policies
Research and Learning Environment Policy

The Library supports an environment conducive to quiet study, research and group work. Students and other Library patrons are encouraged to observe the following rules:

  • Please lower your voice in the Library. Study rooms are available for group discussions.
  • Rowdy or destructive behavior is inappropriate and those exhibiting such behavior will be asked to leave.
  • The use of mobile phones is allowed in the Library but ringers must be switched off. Mobile phone conversations should be conducted outside the Library.
  • Facilities are available for the utilization of electronic equipment, i.e., laptops, TV/DVD, etc. Please use earphones to keep the noise level low or use the mute key on the computer.
  • Please use the Library’s furniture appropriately. Keep feet off the furniture and do not rock back on the chair legs.
  • Please help maintain a clean atmosphere and remove personal items, papers, water bottles and litter when leaving the library.
  • Study space may not be reserved with unattended personal belongings. Unattended books, computers, etc. will be removed and relocated to Lost Property by library staff.
  • Water and covered drinks are permitted. Open drinks and food are not permitted.
  • Users that fail to observe these rules may be asked to leave the library.
  • Those who repeatedly fail to observe these rules will be referred to the Dean of Students.

Circulation of Materials

Those interested in borrowing materials from the AUD Library are encouraged to consult the following guidelines:

Policies and Procedures

  • AUD faculty, staff and their families, currently registered AUD students and AUD Alumni with AUD Alumni Association membership can check materials out.
  • Students must have their AUD ID cards (or class schedule) to check out material.
  • Students, faculty and staff are responsible for all items checked out in their name and/or their ID number.
  • Students may check items out over the break between terms if the student has registered for the following semester and they show their Registrar’s Class List for the following semester.
  • Books from the general collection, videos, DVD’s, ESL readers, back issues of journals, reserves and electronic items (calculators, adaptor plugs and internet cables), are circulated.
  • Reference books, current periodicals and newspapers, are materials not circulated.

Circulation Periods
Students
Faculty and Administrative Staff
Books: 3 weeks - maximum of 6 checked out at a time (‘6’ includes DVDs and Videos) Books: 3 weeks. No limit to items checked out
Journals: 2 nights - maximum of 6 journals. Journals: 2 nights
Videos and DVDs: 1 week Videos and DVDs: 1 week
Reserves: In-library use material is due back before students leave the Library (after 2 hours or 4 hours). Faculty materials: until end of the term
Reserves that circulate outside the Library have varying due dates, depending on the title (24 or 48 hours).

Renewals
Reserve and Electronic materials (calculators, plugs and cables) may not be renewed. All other circulating material may be renewed once unless a HOLD is placed on the item by another patron.

Holds
If an item is checked out to someone else, a HOLD can be placed on the item to notify the user when it is returned. Users will have 3 days to come and check out the item. After 3 days it will be returned to the shelf.

Overdues
Fines are charged on all overdue material (exceptions following) at the rate of AED 1 per day, to a maximum of AED 50 per item. Reserve items, DVDs, videos and calculators have daily fines of AED 3 per hour or per day (depending on the item). Users will not be allowed to check out any material from the library until the fine(s) is paid.

Damaged or Lost Items

  • Items that need to be replaced due to loss or damage are charged at the replacement cost of the item plus processing fee plus fines, if applicable.
  • Replacement costs will be determined when the item has been declared lost. If an item is out of print, its replacement cost will be the average cost of an item for that subject. Replacement cost for a calculator is AED 45 (for scientific) or AED 150 (for financial). Replacement cost for a plug adapter is AED 5 and for an internet cable is AED 10.
  • Processing fees for non-fiction materials are AED 50 per item. Processing fees for fiction, journals and/or electronic items are AED 10 per item.

Blocks
Students with overdue material or outstanding fines/bills at the end of the semester will not be allowed to register for classes, receive their grades and/or diplomas until the material is returned and outstanding bills are paid.
