| The primary mission of the American University in Dubai Library is to provide information resources and services to support the instructional programs and educational goals of the university; namely, to help students prepare for a career, develop life-long learning and critical thinking skills and to promote diversity in the student body and educational programs.
A complementary mission is to support the research and staff development needs of AUD faculty and staff; in limited situations, the library will also offer research support to scholars outside the AUD community.
The operational goals of the library's mission include facilitating access to information through:
- the development of the library print collection and electronic information and access to external information sources,
- the library's organization and arrangement for access,
- appropriate reference services and user education programs, and
- the maintenance of facilities of an adequate size and quality to house collections, resources, and equipment and to provide adequate space for patrons and library personnel.
The library seeks to develop cooperative arrangements with other AIU libraries with the goals of maximizing resource sharing and providing a level of consistency in programs and services. The library also seeks to develop relationships with other libraries, library organizations and relevant professional groups to develop networks that will widen the collection, increase library professional development and have access to other additional professional expertise.
The primary focus of the collection is on the subjects covered in programs offered at AUD, although other material not related to programs will be purchased for a diversified collection. Bibliographic records of materials are available through catalogs and indexes that allow patrons' access to resources available.
Bibliographic instruction is geared towards immediate use of existing resources and to encourage independent research and study. Point-of-use instruction, personal guidance in conducting library research, and traditional reference services are also offered.
Policies and procedures are developed to allow for the widest possible use of resources by AUD patrons.
