Huda Smitshuijzen AbiFarès

Special Projects Director & Associate Professor of Graphic Design
 
     

Special Skills:
Through her roles as an educator, researcher, writer, graphic designer, cultural project curator and coordinator, she investigates multilingual and cross-cultural visual communication focusing on typographic design and research.

History:
Prior to teaching at AUD (since 2000), she has has taught for 3 years at the American University of Beirut (AUB). Prior to and alongside teaching, she has worked as a designer since 1987, in the US , Amsterdam , France and Beirut . She teaches typography and graphic design courses and organizes events, conferences, workshops and exhibitions for the Visual Communication department at AUD. She has published a number of articles on multi-lingual communication in the Middle East, for design magazines like Baseline (UK), Items (The Netherlands), Bidoun (NY) and ArabAd ( Lebanon ). She lectures frequently on the topic of Arabic typography and Arab visual culture at various international design venues and colleges (such as ATypI conference in Vancouver , Gutenberg Museum in Mainz , Bibliotheque Nationale de France in Paris , VCU Qatar, Lebanese American University in Beirut, Parsons School of Design in NY, the Royal Academy of Art in the Hague).

When not teaching:
She likes to read books that warp language and mind and that expand her creative thinking and boundless imagination. She is an avid film addict with a penchant for sci-fi and animation. She also likes to invent book projects (writing and designing them).

Discoveries/Inspirations:
My inspirations come from the things that surround me and the things linked to personal memories... oriental music and jazz, dance and beautiful words, Islamic art, Mark Rothko, any kind of rhythm that can move my my body and soul...

Rhode Island School of Design, MFA in Graphic Design. 1987
Yale University School of Art, MFA in Graphic Design. 1990.

"Arabic Typography: a comprehensive sourcebook" (Saqi Books, London , 2001).
"Experimental Arabic Type" (Saatchi & Saatchi, Dubai , 2002).
"Typographic Matchmaking" (BIS Publishers, Amsterdam 2007).

Notables:
She has founded the Khatt Foundation, center for Arabic typography ( Amsterdam , 2004). The foundation is non-profit organization with goals to create cultural bridges between East and West through typography and design projects.
