Keynote speakers

Dr. V. Anne Smith

Dr. V. Anne SmithDr Smith received her undergraduate degree in Biology with a Mathematics minor from the College of William and Mary in Virginia, after which she undertook a PhD in Animal Behaviour at Indiana University. She quickly included computational components in her doctoral work, examining social behaviour in birds from a complex systems perspective using Data Mining techniques. Her postdoctoral work at Duke University in bioinformatics applied to songbird brains introduced her to Bayesian networks, around which her current research focuses. She runs an interdisciplinary research group at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, using computational methods to examine genetic, neuronal, and ecological networks and including an experimental yeast laboratory. She is active in both SULSA (Scottish Universities Life Science Alliance) and SICSA (Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance).

Prof. Martin Breunig

Prof. Martin BreunigMartin Breunig obtained his diploma in Computer Science from the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, in 1989. From 1990-2000 he was a member of the database groups of Hans-Jörg Schek at TU Darmstadt, Heinz Schweppe at FU Berlin, and Armin B. Cremers at Bonn University. In 1995 and 2000, respectively, he obtained his Ph.D. and habilitation both at Bonn University, Germany. From 1995-2000 he was a member of the execute board at the Special Research Centre 350 at Bonn University. From 2002 - 2003 he was director of the Institute for Environmental Sciences at Vechta University. Martin Breunig was guest professor and visiting researcher at Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Géologie Nancy, ETH Zürich, University of Vienna, Staffordshire University (UK), and Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg. Currently, he is professor for Geoinformatics at University of Osnabrück, Germany. He directs the geo-database group and several collaborative and Geotechnologien projects.
