Faculty Research, Scholarly Output and Creative Work
The focus of AUD’s Mission on teaching does not preclude engagement in other areas of activity which are also part of or consistent with AUD’s Mission and/or with its Purpose-related Goals. Research, scholarly output and creative work by AUD faculty are viewed in this context, as such activities contribute to the fulfillment of AUD’s Mission, to the extent that they contribute to the “advancement of society.” (See AUD’s Mission Statement).

Additionally, faculty research, scholarly output and creative work contribute directly to the achievement of the following Purpose-related Goals of the University

  • To cultivate and reward excellence, especially as it affects the imparting, acquisition, and advancement of knowledge
  • To recruit and retain a diverse faculty of qualified educators, providing them with the environment and opportunity to flourish
  • To contribute to the economic and societal development of Dubai, the United Arab Emirates and beyond

University support to full-time faculty members engaged in research, scholarly and creative activities is provided both through funding and through release time. Other support mechanisms also exist University-wide or at the academic unit level. These mechanisms include course buyouts for faculty members who secure external grant funding, competitive faculty-student mentorship grants, teaching load reductions for faculty members who teach graduate-level courses, and a competitive faculty teaching offset program for faculty members who submit well-developed research, scholarly or creative activity plans.
The university recognizes faculty accomplishments through four competitive Provost’s Annual Awards, which include an Award for Outstanding Research, an Award for Creativity in Design and the Visual Arts and an Award for Outstanding Literary Achievement.
